It's been rumored that Android M's release is bound to happen anytime now, and many are wondering which devices will get it first.

Lately, reports said that Samsung is "currently preparing a major update for the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6 edge+ and the Galaxy Note 5," according to SamMobile.

"At this point all we know is that the next update for the four devices will be bigger than the usual updates we see every now and then," the news source added.

In the wake of this leak, it's been speculated that the said update is likely to be Android 6.0 Marshmallow as the said Samsung handsets already come equipped with the latest Android OS version, 5.1.1 Lollipop.

However, Marshmallow cannot be expected to arrive in the flagship devices on the date of the OS' release, as is the usual practice in previous upgrades. The devices first in line to receive the update are the Nexus devices, of course. The speed at which Android M arrives in various handsets depend on the carrier or smartphone maker. It's been observed, though, that Samsung generally is pretty quick in rolling out new Android OS versions.

Further, SamMobile said that Marshmallow may be rolled out to Note 4, but it's not clear when that will happen.

Meanwhile, Android Police reported that the upcoming OS version will be released to Nexus 5, 6, 7(2013), 9, and Player starting on October 5th.

"As with all of Google's updates, you can expect the process to be slow if you wait for the OTA," the site explained. "The update ZIP will probably be located quickly, though, allowing you to manually update."

"There will also be factory images available if you need to flash back to stock or are rooted. October 5th is when the final Marshmallow code will be pushed to AOSP too," it added.

Further, the site said that Marshmallow will not be rolled out to the Nexus 4, 7 (2012), and 10, which means these models will remain in Lollipop land forever.

Looks like owners of older Android handsets may have to get new models to stay up-to-date.

Android M 6.0 is said to bring a number of changes to Android-powered handsets, such as "user-facing app permission controls - what most are calling granular app permissions - and the change to API level 23, which introduces stock fingerprint scanner support for Android 6.0 security," as noted by Android Pit.

Further, the new update will still look the same as Lollipop, although there is an option for users to download Marshmallow wallpapers. However, the dark theme, which was present in the first Marshmallow version presented by Google to the public, has been scrapped for some unknown reason.
