Super Smash Bros. 4 is the top Nintendo-exclusive gamers are looking forward to in 2014, and the Wii U and 3DS game has been the subject of much speculation as to what characters and stages will be included. Now, it has been revealed by game director Masahiro Sakurai through the MiiVerse that a new stage for the game will be based on Super Mario Galaxy.

The new stage will see fighters attempt to take each other out on a round stage, but it is unclear if players will be able to go around to all parts of the planet's surface or if they will be restricted to the northern hemisphere of the stage. Sakurai also warned that the planet's gravity will draw players towards the center of the planet, so users will have to fight gravity as well as each other when using the new stage. Planet Mario can be seen in the background of the stage as well.

It is unclear if this stage is exclusive to the Wii U version of the game, or if the stage will also come to the 3DS. Both consoles for the most part have separate stages based on games that appear on either console or handheld systems. For example, the Legend of Zelda stage on the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. 4 is based on Skyward Sword, while the 3DS has a stage based on Spirit Tracks.

This announcement has refueled hope that the original Super Mario Galaxy, initially released for the Wii, could be released again with HD graphics on the Wii U. Nothing has been officially announced, but Nintendo has hinted that there is a possibility that the game could get a facelift and be released for a new generation of fans.

It is unclear when the game will be released, or what sort of roster the game will have. Over a dozen fighters have been confirmed to appear in the game, and for the most part all are returning characters, such as the latest confirmed character, Marth from the Fire Emblem series. The only completely new characters for the game so far are Mega Man, the Animal Crossing Villager, and the Wii Fit Trainer. These three characters were announced at E3 2013 in June, so Nintendo must be holding their cards close to the chest when it comes to what surprise characters will be included in Super Smash Bros. 4.
