Eve Online, one of the longest running MMOs currently, will receive a new free update June 4th, entitled Odyssey. This will be the 19th update for the nearly decade-old space exploration, warfare, and trade game.

One of the main features of the update will be a retooling of the scanning ability. This will allow users to uncover more secrets about the universe the game is set in. In addition, there will be a redistribution of resources within the game's settings. This will allow fresh new gameplay as players and factions vie for these new hotspots, Some different types of ships will become redesigned, in addition to new "tools of war" being added to each of the four factions within the game. Star bases will also be improved with the update.

With these new gameplay changes, Eve Online will also get a graphical update, as well as an interface change as well. CCP has also promised users a few new surprises with the update, though details about what those surprises are remain a mystery.

Many are excited about the new update, maybe none more than the developers who worked on it. Eve Online senior producer Andie Nordgren shared his enthusiasm with Eurogamer.

"Odyssey is an expression of our love for space and exploration...It brings changes that will wake the wanderlust and taste for adventure in both new and veteran pilots," Nordgren said.

Despite the age of the game, Eve Online has a dedicated and growing population of gamers. CCP announced that the game has passed half a million subscribers recently, showing that not all games have to go free-to-play in order to survive the crowded MMO market.
