Hideo Kojima is being rather mysterious about his new project, entitled The Phantom Pain, but he believes that should be the intent of game trailers.

In an interview with Edge, the creator of the Metal Gear Solid was rather short on details on The Phantom Pain, which many believe to be at least connected to the Metal Gear Solid universe (or even Metal Gear 5). However, Kojima did not discuss any new details about the game, and instead discussed his views that game trailers should be misleading to gamers.

"I do think it's important to leave hints, but, in a sense, I think it's important to mislead people with hints because I think if something's too predictable then it's no longer fun," he said.

"I think that's the problem with many Hollywood sequels, you get exactly what you expect. But what I want to do, is make people look forward to a game by watching the trailers and say 'Hey, that looks great.' But then, when they actually play it, they have this sort of epiphany where they realise 'Oh, so that's what that was.' And it all kind of comes together and clicks in their head. I think that's very important that you leave some sense of discovery for the player."

Clearly Kojima has taken a cue from television shows such as Lost, and wants viewers wanting more after watching a trailer, rather than getting a short overview what what will be in the game. Certainly it has helped fuel discussion about The Phantom Pain, as gamers have no concrete idea what the project will be like. The game is being produced by Moby Dick Studios by Joakim Mogren...which may be an anagram for Kojima. With so much up mystery wrapped up in the game, expect more updates on the game as they develop.
