Rio Olympics 2016: John Wall Believes Steph Curry, Chris Paul, Kyrie Irving, Russell Westbrook Have Spot on USA Roster
As much as John Wall wants to be on the USA roster for the Rio Olympics 2016, he also thinks that he won't be able to make the cut. According to CSN Washington, Wall made a small statement, saying, "I'll be out of the picture," without giving any details.
Despite being included in the NBA All-Star twice already, Wall still thinks that there are more valuable players that will be included in the U.S. team. Chris Paul has been a member of the team when they took the Olympic Gold Medal and Stephen Curry was in when the U.S. team sweep off the World Cup in 2014, and, just recently, he lead the Golden State Warriors to the NBA Championship. John Wall is currently organizing a minicamp for his teammates that is expected to begin on Sunday through Wednesday.
John Wall also mentioned Kyrie Irving, which is currently teamed up with LeBron James in the Cleveland Cavaliers. LeBron James is an understatement when it comes to the Rio Olympics 2016, and whether he opts in or not, his name is up there. His humble statement of not being able to make the cut has been a far cry from his previous rant after he didn't make the cut for the World Cup. He also thinks that Russel Westbrook will be hitched as a two-guard, which make his chances even bleaker than he expected. In a recently held Team USA minicamp, John Wall was among the 34 attendees vying to make the 12-man roster.
Names came up such as Kevin Durant, Anthony Davis, James Harden, Blake Griffin and Paul George. According to Jerry Colangelo, managing director of the USA Basketball team, the minicamp is mandatory to all players vying for a spot on the USA team. However, according to Sports Illustrated, LeBron James can only make it to the minicamp on a specified amount of time due to other activities that coincide with his foundation. The minicamp is also used as a friendship bond between teams in the NBA in order to spread sportsmanship and camaraderie within the franchise.
Plagued with injuries and a recovery season, Derrick Rose opted out of the camp with new additions that included, DeAndre Jordan, Draymond Green, Mike Conley and Harrison Barnes. The summer camp is not about competition, but an opportunity to show what they can offer to the Team USA for the upcoming Rio Olympics 2016.
