NBA News 2013: Chicago Bulls Pursuing Former Defensive Player of the Year; Marquis Teague To Play More Minutes Next Season
The Chicago Bulls have reportedly offered a one-year, veteran minimum deal to free agent Marcus Camby, a source close to the situation reported on Tuesday.
In a report by Chicago Tribune, the Bulls are one of three teams interested in signing Camby, who will enter his 17th year in the NBA. The Houston Rockets and Miami Heat are also looking to sign the star player.
Camby, the former Defensive Player of the Year, played with the New York Knicks this past season, where he averaged just 1.8 points and 3.3 rebounds in 10 minutes per game.
Notably, the player has a connection with Tom Thibodeau dating back when the Bulls head coach was just an assistant for the New York Knicks.
The 39-year-old was drafted second overall by the Toronto Raptors in 1996 after an outstanding college basketball career at University of Massachusetts.
Following two seasons with the Raptors, Camby went on to play for the Knicks, the Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Clippers, Portland Trail Blazers and Houston Rockets. The highlight of his career, however, was his tenure with the Nuggets, where he was named Defensive Player of the Year in 2007 and selected to the All-NBA Defensive Team four times.
Meanwhile, Bulls point guard Marquis Teague is expected to have a bigger role in his second season in the league. The 20-year-old Teague averaged 18.3 points and 4.8 assists per game in the Las Vegas Summer League.
Despite the return of Derrick Rose and the presence of veteran ball handler Kirk Hinrich, Teague will still see more playing time as the Bulls hope the former Kentucky Wildcats guard can be another revelation for the team following a breakout season by shooting guard Jimmy Butler last year.
