National Basketball Association (NBA) commissioner David Stern has told both the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets owners to tone down the trash-talking, after both teams have been lobbing digs at each other over the past few months.

The New York Post is reporting that sources confirmed the commissioner sat down with the Knicks' owner James Dolan and Brooklyn Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov to diffuse the tension between both franchises.

"There was such a meeting and the parties both said it was a very cordial and pleasant one," said one league official with knowledge of the sit-down, to the New York Post.

The Knicks and Nets have been sniping at each other - especially since Brooklyn added Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Jason Terry via a blockbuster draft-day trade with the Boston Celtics. Pierce in particular, who was not fond of the Knicks, even as a member of the Celtics, made his feelings clear as to his problem.

"Everybody knows how much I disliked the Knicks when I was with the Celtics, but I think it's grown to another level," Pierce said to ESPN NewYork 98.7 FM. "I think it's time for the Nets to start running this city."

Knick guard Raymond Felton strongly strongly rebuked the new Brooklyn Nets' statement.

"They will never take over the city. Because we've got 'New York' on our chest," Felton said on Sunday. "They've got 'Brooklyn' on their chest, and we've got 'New York.' They'll never take over the city."

Both teams have re-stocked and re-tooled as they head into the 2013-2014 NBA season - with the Nets having also added former Minnesota Timberwolve Andrei Kirilenko to play with point guard Deron Williams and center Brook Lopez. while the Knicks added former Toronto Raptor Andrea Bergnin, former New Yorker Metta World Peace, and draft pick Tim Hardaway Jr. to play alongside with Carmelo Anthony, Tyson Chandler, and JR Smith (who re-signed with the team during the off-season).

Even the owners have gotten involved in taking digs at each others conference rivals, with Dolan lodging an unoffical complaint with the league after being called "a little man" by Prokhorov during a New York magazine interview last year. During the press conference announcing the signings of Garnett, Pierce, Terry, and Kirilenko, Prokhorov took a shot at his rival joking with the media that "he's watching us for the time being."

The league, with his eye on the 2015 All-Star Game, wants both parties to be able to work together so that both teams could help host 2015 All-Star events - with the Barclay Center hosting Friday's and Saturday's festivities while Madison Square Garden would host the game itself.

"There is a process in that the (Knicks and Nets) are working together, said NBA deputy commissioner Adam Silver to the New York Post. "On a business level, the teams get along very well; the nature of the sport is that the teams are highly competitive and you want them to be but they both recognize that they're partners in the league and this is something that is positive for both teams."
