NBA News: OKC Thunder Put Former No.2 Overall Pick on Trading Block; Phoenix Suns Shopping Kendall Marshall
The Oklahoma City Thunder are reportedly looking to trade former no.2 overall pick Hasheem Thabeet in an effort to acquire another trade exception, a reliable league source close disclosed on Monday.
Drafted no.2 overall by the Memphis Grizzlies in 2009, the 7-foot-3 Thabeet is considered as one of the notable draft busts over the last decade after spending most of his career playing in the D-League and sitting on the bench.
According to John Rohde of the Oklahoman, the Thunder are trying to trade Thabeet in exchange for a third trade exception after gaining over $9 million for shopping Eric Maynor and Kevin Martin.
"The fact $500,000 would stay on OKC's books even if Thabeet is released could be his biggest leverage to remain on the roster because the Thunder has much better things to do than forfeit half a million bucks to someone no longer on the team," Rohde stated in his report.
"Then again, Thabeet could be dealt to another team and become the Thunder's third trade exception (roughly $2.5 million for Eric Maynor, which expires Feb. 21, 2014; roughly $6.6 million for Kevin Martin, which expires July 11, 2014)."
The former UConn Huskies standout averaged 2.3 points and 2.8 rebounds over four NBA seasons.
The Phoenix Suns are also trying to trade away former North Carolina Tar Heels point guard Kendall Marshall.
Marshall, the no.13 overall pick in last year's draft, has failed to make an impression in his rookie season as he averaged 3.0 points and 3.0 dimes in 48 games for the Suns.
According to Scott Howard-Cooper of NBA.com, the Suns hope to get a first round pick in the 2014 Draft in exchange for the pass-first but non-athletic point guard.
