NBA 2014 News: Lakers New Coach Won’t be Kobe Bryant's Decision Says GM
Kobe Bryant may be the biggest Los Angeles Lakers star, but he certainly does not have the last word on the next head coach.
After Mike D'Antoni was removed from the team after the Lakers performed a record low in over 50 years, an aggressive search has begun with the intent of putting the Lakers back in their former glory. In an article on Bleacher Report, Mitch Kupchak, general manager of the L.A. Lakers, said that they actually ask for Kobe's advice every now and then but they do not give it utmost consideration. Whenever Kobe is in the facility, Kupchak would spend time to talk to the superstar on team matters, but they do not practically consult him before interviews and other important discussions that involve team executives.
Previously, Kobe shared to Jimmy Kimmel that he wanted to be given importance in picking the Lakers' next coach. The team has had two coaches in a span of about two years with terrible results. Even the addition of Dwight Howard previously did not meet their expectations. Kobe did compliment the franchise in staying aggressive to keep the Lakers a formidable team in the NBA. Other experts suggest that the Lakers heed at least some of Kobe's inputs, considering how their 2014-2015 season will revolve around the star, writes Lakers Nation.
In a report by ESPN, Kobe said that he was not involved in picking Brown and D'Antoni. He hoped that he would be given a place to help pick the ideal head coach this time. Kupchak said that the hiring process will not start until the draft lottery arrangement is finalized and presented. In the meantime, Kupchack expects results from Kobe on the court, after staying out for the remainder of the season since late 2013 due to a knee injury.
The Lakers are already going over their list of potential coaches for the following season. Hopefully, he will be work well with the team's biggest star.
