NBA News: Lionel Hollins & Byron Scott Looking to Coach the Lakers
Lionel Hollins, former head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies, and Byron Scott, former head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers, are eyeing a job head coaching the Los Angeles Lakers, LA Times writes. Mike D'Antoni recently resigned to the rejoice of many Lakers fans.
Despite the exit of D'Antoni, the Lakers are still in a predicament after suffering their worst season in a span of over 50 years. First of all, they have to improve their roster, which can be helped by early picks in the 2014 NBA Draft. Second, Kobe Bryant is in his final professional years and it is still uncertain whether he will be strong enough after his recent injury. The Lakers were direct in sharing that they are carefully looking for the best coach available who can bring the team together despite their current challenges.
Byron Scott has a good relationship with Jerry Buss when he was still playing for the L.A. Lakers. Lionel Hollins seems to have the proper background and experience to make the team rebuilding task successful. Other options for the Lakers to assume the role of head coach include Ettore Messina, who is with CSKA Moscow in the meantime. Kurt Rambis is also speculated to possibly land the coaching job. He used to coach the Minnesota Timberwolves and was D'Antoni's assistant during his tenure with the Lakers. Kevin Ollie is another good option who led the University of Connecticut to their national championship title, according to Bleacher Report.
In a report by SB Nation, Steve Kerr is also interested in getting a head coaching position in the league, although he is more likely to accept Phil Jackson's offer to work with the New York Knicks. Doc Rivers may also transfer after the recent incident with the Clippers and the banning of Donald Sterling. Stan Van Gundy is a potential candidate but NBA critics believe that will turn down any offer from the Lakers.
