New York Knicks Coach 2014: Steve Kerr Eyed for Head Coach Position By May
Steve Kerr is set to become head coach of the New York Knicks after Round 1 of the NBA playoffs. According to ESPN, Phil Jackson, the new president of the team, is determined to acquire Kerr. The former Chicago Bulls player is expected to take on the role in May 2014.
Jackson and Kerr have already discussed matters, and the former Bulls player seemed interested in trying other jobs from the NBA sidelines as the playoffs continue. Aside from the New York Knicks, the Golden State Warriors also showed their interest in acquiring Kerr. He is very close with Kirk Lacob, son of Warriors owner Joe Lacob; however, Kerr is equally close to Jackson.
Bleacher Report wrote that when Kerr was playing off the bench for the Bulls with Jackson as the head coach, they won a three-peat championship together with Michael Jordan. It is evident that Phil Jackson, once more, plans to implement the triangle offense in the New York Knicks. The strategy was very effective when used by Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal and the rest of the Lakers when they also won championships under Phil.
Kerr and Jackson met twice to further discuss the details. The now NBA analyst shared, "We will keep talking. There is a lot to cover on both sides. This was the first time we've talked about the job. It just opened up last week. We've got a lot of things to discuss."
Kerr has actually no experience from the bench, while Jackson has no experience in the front office. However, the two seemed to fit their new functions well. Kerr was general manager of the Phoenix Suns for four years. He also further emphasized his interest in becoming a head coach and said that his tandem with Jackson would be most interesting.
The top commentator on TNT said, "I know Phil (said) we shared the same space, which I think is well said." He expressed that they have a lot of similar philosophies and that he learned much of his style and principles of play from Jackson.
