NBA Draft 2014 News Update: 7'5" New Mexico Player Joins Drafts
Sim Bhullar, a hulking 7'5 center who plays for the Aggies, was revealed by NBA scouting reporter Josh Gershion, to be part of the 2014 NBA Draft, writes NBC Sports. Gershion posted on Twitter, "New Mexico State sophomore center Sim Bhullar is entering the NBA Draft, per a source."
However, despite his towering and muscular frame, Bhullar needs more consistency. He averages 10.4 points and 7.8 rebounds a game. He is not playing as much as he should because he fatigues easily and also gets into foul trouble a lot, according to a report by SB Nation. He averaged 25.3 minutes per game.
Bhullar also has a 7'3 brother who plays center at New Mexico State. Bhullar is originally from Toronto, Canada.
He is not expected to be drafted in the first round. He played 30 games in the current New Mexico season, shooting 64.8 percent from the field during his second year and 63.3 percent in his career. His blocking percentage is good at 3.4 per game. In the whole country, he ranks seventh in blocks, totaling 99 for the regular season. He averages 1.4 assists per game, and his best showing in the season was when he scored 24 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked five shots, during the WAC quarterfinals where the WAC won over Seattle.
Draft Express and Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated frowned upon the idea of Bhullar joining the NBA. According to NBA experts, he should be a lot more powerful than his 355-pound body is showing. Mannix tweeted on April 17, 2014, "Whoever is reportedly telling Sim Bhullar that it's a good idea to enter the NBA draft is someone Bhullar should stop listening to." Draft Express did not include him in its top 100 draft picks, although it ranked him as the 75th best player among sophomores in college. Statistically, very large players have shorter professional careers compared to smaller guys.
However, Sim Bhullar was included in the WAC's All-Defensive team and even named Most Outstanding Player of the 2013 WAC tournament. He was an important player for the Aggies in a couple of NCAA tournament trips, headed by Marvin Menzie.
Fan Sided writes that he will let go of his last two seasons of eligibility and become a professional basketball player. However, Draft Express predicts that he will not be drafted by any NBA team in June 2014.
