NBA Schedule, Scores & News Update: Timberwolves' Dante Cunningham Arrested Twice in a Week
In a span of three days, Dante Cunningham was arrested twice. The Timberwolves forward was arrested for the second time on April 6, 2014 on suspicion of terrorist threats.
The Medina, Minnesota Police took the 26-year-old into custody, writes Chatham Daily News. His first arrest was due to domestic assault by strangulation, for which he earned one felony count after allegedly choking his girlfriend for 15 to 20 seconds. His girlfriend alleged that Cunningham slammed her against the wall in his suburban home in Minneapolis during an argument. According to the police, she did not need medical treatment from injuries.
In a report by ESPN, he was arrested for domestic assault on April 3, 2014 (Thursday) and again on April 6 (Sunday). Cunningham refused to talk more about the allegations but police officer Chris McGill cited that the Medina Police would provide more information on April 7. Cunningham was let out of prison on April 4 after posting a $40,000 bail and rejoined his team the next day in Orlando, Florida, to play against the Magic. The Timberwolves lost to the Orlando Magic with Cunningham garnering 12 points and six rebounds in 33 minutes of play.
Minnesota law describes "terrorist threats" as situations where a person directly or indirectly threatens to common violence with the main objective of terrorizing another invidual.
The Minnesota Timberwolves said in a press statement, "The situation with Dante Cunningham is very fluid and we continue to monitor all available information." They added, "We reiterate that the Minnesota Timberwolves do not condone the behavior described in the accusations. We continue to wait for the legal process to run its course and will have further comment when appropriate." based on a report by Sports Illustrated.
These were not the only occasions that Cunningham was arrested. In 2011, he was arrested for possessing marijuana, marijuana paraphernalia and a loaded BB gun in Pennsylvania. The items were discovered and seized by a police officer after he was caught for speeding and reckless driving.
