The NBA, in reaction to the recent actions of New York Knicks guard J.R. Smith, issued a warning for the act of untying an opponent's shoes. According to NBA Sports Illustrated, the player did the questionable deed during his team's win over the Dallas Mavericks.

The incident occurred during free throws given to Mavs' Dirk Nowtizki. As Smith and the Mavs' Shawn Marion stood on the lines waiting for the free throw, the Knicks guard stooped down and untied the shoelaces of Marion's left shoe. The forward saw what Smith had done but had jockeyed for a rebound position as the second free throw was shot by Nowitzki. He later on tied his shoelaces after the New York possession.

Immediately after the warning was issued, Smith again attempted to untie another opponent's shoelaces. This time he was caught trying to do so during the Knicks' game against the Pistons (watch the video below). According to a CBS Sports report, JR Smith was interrogated regarding the shoelace incident and was accordingly given a "warning" as well as a reminder that it should not happen again. However, he repeated the michief in the first quarter of their game, when he tried, albeit unsuccessfully, to untie the shoelaces of Pistons center Greg Monroe.

SBNation reports that the NBA announced that Smith will be fined $50,000 for what it called as "recurring instances of unsportsmanlike conduct."

Smith took to Twitter after the first incident, saying "Yea I do it every game! RT@bwolfe_22:@TheRealJRSmith. I seen you untie Dwights shoe against the rockets too! Haha didn't you?"

For his part, New York Knicks coach Mike Woodson said that Smith shouldn't do things like that. He said, in a report on the Dallas News, "I've always said I don't condone things that I know you shouldn't do and no, I'm not happy about this, because again, he was warned, he comes back and makes the same mistake and it's not right."

He further added, "I'm going to address it tomorrow when he comes in here for work, because it's unacceptable. I mean it really is. I mean, it's unprofessional. That's the only word I can use, or two words. It's just, you can't do that. You just cannot do that."
