NBA Trade Rumors: Eric Bledsoe, Gravis Vasquez To Get Big Money Next Summer, Despite No Contract Extension
The Phoenix Suns' Eric Bledsoe and Sacramento Kings star Gravis Vasquez did not receive any extension from their respective teams. But still, these two solid play makers could be on their way to getting their largest paycheck of their careers when they become free agents next summer.
The Suns nabbed a young and dynamic point guard in Bledsoe last summer after they sent veteran marksman Jared Dudley to the Los Angeles Clippers in a three-team trade that also involved the Milwaukee Bucks.
Despite already signing fledgling point guard Goran Dragic to a 4-year, $34 million deal, the Suns decided to get another combo guard and form their backcourt of the future.
Through the first four games this season, Bledsoe lived up to his hype as the 'Baby LeBron' by filling up big numbers across his stats sheet as he averaged 22.0 points, 8.7 assists, 6.3 rebounds, 2.0 steals in 35.7 minutes per game.
On Sunday, Bledsoe pulled off one of the best overall performance so far this season after recording 26 points, 14 assists, 7 rebounds, 3 steals with 8 turnovers in a 103-96 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Surprisingly, Suns President of Basketball Operations Lon Babby did not hammer a deal to extend Bledsoe's contract, allowing the guard to become a restricted free agent after this season. However, Babby stressed that the plan is to still match any offer sheet for Bledsoe next summer, no matter how pricey it would be.
"Both sides are trying to make projections on what Eric's performance and new role are going to be," Babby said Thursday night via Arizona Central.com. "Those projections are not necessarily precise and, from the Suns' perspective, it needs to be considered from the context that Eric will be a restricted free agent in the summer, which gives us matching rights.
In the end, it seemed prudent to wait until July. In the meantime, we will be rooting for Eric to have a great season," he added.
Gravis Vasquez Situation
The Sacramento Kings acquired Vasquez after agreeing to a sign-and-trade deal with the New Orleans Pelicans, who got the service of former Kings Rookie of the Year Tyreke Evans.
Vasquez had a breakout year last season after averaging 13.9 points, 9.0 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game with then the Hornets. This season, the Venezuelan is just averaging 9.0 points and 3.7 assists in 26.7 minutes per game as Isiah Thomas got more action on the floor.
Though his numbers plunged a bit through the first three games, Vasquez is expected to draw enough interest from teams next summer because of his exploits with the Hornets. NBA GMs know that Vasquez is more effective when given enough minutes on the floor.
