NBA News 2013: Dwight Howard Upset Orlando Magic Have Not Retired His Old Jersey Number
Dwight Howard knows the Orlando Magic organization and fans were disappointed after he left the squad, but the perennial NBA All-Star center said that he was upset with the team for allowing Tobias Harris to wear his No. 12 jersey.
Howard, who wore No. 12 during his eight-year stay in Orlando, believes that he has done enough for the franchise in order to warrant them to courteously disallow their players from using his old jersey number.
"I just think that despite whatever happened, there were a lot of things that I did and that we did as a team, and that number was special down there. And I was a little bit upset about that," Howard said in an interview with the Orlando Sentinel.
But according to the Sentinel, Howard is likely unaware why Harris decided to wear No. 12 when he was acquired by the Magic in a trade with the Milwaukee Bucks. The 21-year-old small forward requested to wear the number as a tribute to his close friend who passed away due to leukemia.
In a separate interview, Howard said that he believes the Magic should retire his jersey, citing his achievements during his eight-year stay with the team, including an NBA Finals appearance in 2009 and three division titles.
"No doubt," said Howard when asked if the Magic will retire his jersey in the future. "Despite how things ended, we had eight or seven great years. We went to The Finals. A lot of those banners that are in the arena happened when I was there, I was a major part of that. A lot of the records that are there, I put them there."
Howard forced the Magic to trade him before the 2012-13 season in which he played for the Los Angeles Lakers. After his first season with the Lakers, the superstar center did not re-sign with the team and decided to join the Houston Rockets.
