Carmelo Anthony is reportedly the top target of the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2014 free agency period--something that could become reality after the New York Knicks superstar announced recently that he will opt out of the final year of his contract.

In an interview with the New York Observer, Anthony announced that he will test free agency next summer, saying that everybody wants to become a free agent at least once in their career.

"I want to be a free agent," Anthony said. "I think everybody in the NBA dreams to be a free agent at least one time in their career. It's like you have an evaluation period, you know. It's like if I'm in the gym and I have all the coaches, all the owners, all the GMs come into the gym and just evaluate everything I do. So yes, I want that experience."

The 29-year-old forward has two years left on his current contract with the Knicks, but has an opt-out clause in the final year worth $23 million.

According to ESPN, the Knicks could offer the biggest paycheck to Anthony if he decides to stay with the team--a five-year deal worth $129 million. If Anthony decides to sign with another team, the biggest offer he can get is a four-year deal worth $96 million.

Despite announcing that he wants to test free agency, Anthony, who averaged 28.7 points and 6.9 rebounds per game last season, reiterated that New York will still be on top of his list, saying that he came to New York for a reason.

"I came to New York for a reason," Anthony said. "I've been with you all my life, almost to a fault. I wanted to come here and take on the pressures of playing in New York. So one thing I would tell my fans: If you haven't heard it from me, then it ain't true."
