Grand Theft Auto 5 was released on Sept. 17, and the game has been a critical successdespite some hiccups in the game's install process and companion app. The game was part of a massive launch that caused some mayhem, but now the financial figures from the launch have been revealed showing that the game has broken records for day one sales.

Parent company of developer Rockstar games, Take-Two, announced the news to IGN: GTA 5 hauled in $800 million dollars in the first 24 hours of availability. The figure represents the collected totals of the game on all platforms and in all territories, though the game has not yet been released in Japan or Brazil. According to Take-Two, GTA 5 has "the highest first day retail sales of any title in the history of the company and the Grand Theft Auto series."

Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two, spoke about the launch of Grand Theft Auto 5 and the monstrous success the game has enjoyed so far:

"All of us at Take-Two are thrilled with the initial response to Grand Theft Auto V. Once again, the team at Rockstar Games have outdone themselves, setting the entertainment industry's new standard for creativity, innovation and excellence. Beginning at midnight on Monday, consumers around the world gathered in anticipation to be among the first to experience the evolution of this remarkable series. In North America alone, more than 8,300 stores opened their doors at midnight to welcome fans whose loyalty and enthusiasm were rewarded with what The New York Times called 'the most immersive spectacle in interactive entertainment'. We are incredibly proud of Rockstar Games' creative achievement and could not be more pleased with the success of this launch."

Only the single player version of Grand Theft Auto 5 is currently available. The game's highly-anticipated online mode will not be available until October. It will be interesting to see if the game gets a second boost in its sales when the mode becomes available, or if the massive amount of sales on the game's first day causes a sharp dive. After all, with huge amounts of people buying the game on day one, how many are left to buy the game after first couple of days of launch?
