2013 BMW Championship: Tiger Woods ‘Awfully’ Good at Lake Forest, Pulls off Shot of the Day (Video)
The first round of the 2013 BMW Championship has seen some of the best shots from Tiger Woods so far in the FedEx Cup.
The top golfer's remarkable tee shot at No.2 in the first round was probably his best in three weeks while his putting was a thing of beauty to watch throughout the day. Then again, it's not enough for him to take the top spot on the leaderboard after the first round of play at the Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Illinois.
Woods shot a 66 to keep him three strokes behind leader Brandt Snedeker (63). The world's No.1 ranked golfer hasn't found consistency in the past two FedEx Cup tourney, but his performance in Thursday's opener gives everybody a feeling that the Tiger is back in the hunt for another crown.
Then again, there are those who still doubt Woods. Just ask former PGA Tour player and Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee, who has been vocal in his scrutiny of Woods' driver.
"You know his driver might as well be a dead mackerel wrapped in newspapers at the moment," Chamblee said during a media conference call, as reported by ESPN. "It's just awful watching him hit that golf club, just awful."
Chamblee went on to describe Woods as 'overcoached' by Sean Foley, who also served as a swing coach for several A-list golfers such as Hunter Mahan, Lee Westwood, Luke Donald and U.S. Open winner Justin Rose.
Foley had a response for that.
"I don't tell them how to play, and I don't really believe that any coach out here has a lot to do with whether a guy wins or loses," Foley told ESPN. "I can't do what Phil Jackson did. I can't do what Bill Parcells did. I can't grab a guy coming off the green and say, 'Chin up, chest out, life is good, bud.' So it's not really coaching. We don't shift the outcome at all. We don't have anything to do with decision-making, the clubs they pick, anything."
Woods, who is still looking for a Grand Slam title under Foley's tutelage, is currently assured his spot ahead of the FedEx Cup playoffs after collecting enough points throughout the year. Yet, Woods is aware that he needs to find some kind of rhythm heading into the big tourney in Georgia. Apparently, a win in Lake Forest might be the morale booster he really needs.
On Friday, Woods along with Mahan, Rose, Westwood and other Foley's men are out to prove that their coach is better than everybody thinks. Woods and Mahan are in good position to do that since they are up on the leaderboard. One down, three rounds to go for Tiger to hoist another crown this year.
