NBA Trade Rumors 2013: Cleveland Cavaliers Forward Anderson Varejao Expected To Be on Trading Block
The Cleveland Cavaliers are reportedly open to trading power forward Anderson Varejao if newly-acquired center Andrew Bynum is able to live up to his full potential next season, a source close to situation reported on Friday.
According to Sporting News NBA insider Sean Deveney, the Cavaliers are in no rush in trading Varejao, but they could still move the hustling big man before the mid-season trade deadline once Bynum asserts his presence as a reliable player.
Varejao was on a verge of making it into his first All-Star game after averaging 14.1 points and 14.4 rebounds in 25 games last season. But a blood clot in his lung spoiled his All-Star worthy campaign last season.
This offseason, the Cavaliers made a big free agency splash by signing an All-Star-caliber center in Bynum. In his final season with the Los Angeles Lakers, Bynum averaged 18.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game, and made it to his first All-Star appearance.
Bynum was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in a blockbuster four-team trade in the summer of 2012, but the center never played a single game because of knee injuries.
The Cavaliers signed Bynum to a health-based deal that could pay him around $12 million, if he remains with the team for the entire 2012-2013 season.
Varejao is entitled to pocket $9.1 million this year and has a team option in his contract after the 2012-2013 season. In case he is eventually traded, Varejao has a trade clause that would bump up the price of contract by five percent.
According to several NBA analysts, Varejao will draw interest from several contenders looking for an experienced player off the bench.
