NBA Brooklyn Nets News 2013: Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett On Winning Their Second NBA Title
A new era for Brooklyn Nets basketball kicked off on Friday after the team introduced their recently acquired superstars Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce.
Garnett and Pierce, who were traded by the Boston Celtics to the Nets along with streak-shooting guard Jason Terry, vowed to prove that they are not done yet, setting their sights on their second NBA title next season.
When asked about the trade that ended his 15-year career in Boston, Pierce said that his goal was to end his career with the Celtics, but he reiterated that he needs to move on now and focus on winning a championship with the Nets.
"Obviously I would've loved to have finished my career in Boston, but that day and age is finally over with. My ultimate drive is winning a championship," said the 35-year-old veteran in an interview with ESPN.
During the introductory press conference at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Pierce said his role on the Nets is starting to sink in, while also saying that newly-named coach Jason Kidd talked to him before the trade was consummated.
"I talked to new Nets coach Jason Kidd, and he was warming me to the fact of coming to Brooklyn, then he started warming me to the fact that they were trying to get Kevin, too," said Pierce, who then talked to Garnett to convince him to waive his no-trade clause.
"He [Garnett] was excited when I talked to him after warming him up, just to have the opportunity to come and win a championship and be alongside a young prospect like Brook Lopez, who he can try to take to the next level. And once I warmed him up to that, he was all in for it," Pierce added.
Garnett, on the other hand, believes that they have the right pieces to win a championship next season, but the 37-year-old forward reiterated that team chemistry will be key next season.
"It's about how well we gel, learning each other's games. It's going to be the biggest question mark for this team, how well are we going to gel and how quickly. Everyone is going to sacrifice their own games, defense is going to have to be a priority and everybody is going to have to do something they are uncomfortable doing. That's the only way this is going to work."
Aside from acquiring Pierce, Garnett, and Terry from the Celtics in exchange for Gerald Wallace, Kris Humphries, MarShon Brooks, Kris Joseph, and three future first-round picks, the Nets also acquired free agent veteran forward Andrei Kirilenko.
