NBA Free Agency News 2013: Detroit Pistons Sign Josh Smith To Kickstart ‘Super Team’ Ambition
The Detroit Pistons revved up their rebuilding plan with the acquisition of free-agent forward Josh Smith. Apparently, J-Smoove is the starting piece of what will be another 'Super Team' in the motor city.
Pistons general Joe Dumars finally nailed an off-season victory since bringing together Rip Hamilton, Chauncey Billups, Ben Wallace, Tayshaun Prince and later on Rasheed Wallace to form the core of the 2004 NBA championship team.
The timing of Smith's acquisition has never been this perfect for Detroit. With owner Tom Gores aggressively trying to push the Pistons to relevancy again, Smith is considered as the first major step in a flurry of players movements happening soon in Motown.
Smith, who reportedly agreed to sign a four-year, $56 million deal, might be the start of Pistons' own Super Team.
Loaded with draft picks, trade assets and cap space, the Pistons are all set to add more pieces for their ambitious squad. There are rumors that the Raptors are still open to talk with the Pistons about a possible trade for swingman Rudy Gay, although with a better trade compensation.
The Pistons flirted to a trade for Gay last week by offering the expiring contracts of Charlie Villanueva and Rodney Stuckey, who are all due $8 million next season. However, the Raptors management rejected the trade right away, insisting it's not enough for them to let the high-scoring forward go away.
But the J-Smoove deal will change everything soon. With a big NBA Draft coming next summer, the Raptors might revive another negotiation with the Pistons in an attempt to get their first-round pick next season. On the other hand, the Pistons' mentality is to win now, so it would be safe to think that Villanueva and Stuckey will still go to the Raptors along with a first-round pick for Gay.
Meanwhile, the Pistons will watch the Rajon Rondo situation very closely next season. If the Brad Stevens-Rondo partnership eventually collapses, the Pistons might be ready to send budding point guard Brandon Knight, Greg Monroe and draft picks for the rebuilding Celtics.
All of a sudden, the Pistons will have Rondo, Gay, and Smith on the same team. The scary part of it is the development of Andre Drummond as one of the best bigman in the league and the snipping skills of shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, the 8th overall pick in the 2013 Draft. Now, the Pistons will have a young and talented starting unit that will contend for the title right away.
The Pistons' plan might be ambitious, but all Super Teams start with an ambition. An ambition to assemble incredible talents, an ambition to succeed, an ambition to become champion. The Pistons are well on track to pulling it off.
