NBA Free Agency News 2013: Losing Teams in Howard Sweepstakes Tap ‘Plan B’ Free Agents
The Atlanta Hawks, Golden State Warriors and the Dallas Mavericks are starting to tap their alternative plans after Dwight Howard decided to join the Houston Rockets on Friday.
Free-agent forward Paul Millsap reportedly agreed to sign with the Atlanta Hawks on a two-year, $19 million deal. Millsap, the 47th overall pick in 2006, averaged 12.4 points and 7.0 rebounds over seven seasons with the Utah Jazz.
Meanwhile, the Warriors also boosted their lineup by adding Andre Iguodala to their roster. Iguodala, who produced 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists per game in his lone season with the Denver Nuggets, will join forces with the Warriors' formidable starting unit of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, David Lee and Andrew Bogut.
On the other hand, the Mavs are aggressively pursuing former Lakers center Andrew Bynum. The Mavs, who hoped to be back in title contention with Howard in the fold, will now take the alternative route and sign Bynum, who sat out the rest of the 2012-2013 season due to an injured knee.
Bynum was selected as an All-Star starter for the Western Conference after averaging 18.7 points and 11.8 rebounds in his final season with the Lakers, but he was eventually traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in a blockbuster three-team deal involving Howard and Iguodala last summer.
