Dwight Howard has finally made his much-awaited decision, choosing to sign with the Houston Rockets instead of returning to the Los Angeles Lakers.

After several twists and turns, Howard finally announced his decision through his official Twitter account.

"I've decided to become a member of the Houston Rockets. I feel it's the best place for me and I am excited about joining the Rockets and I'm looking forward to a great season. I want to thank the fans in Los Angeles and wish them the best," Howard said after also changing the profile picture of his Twitter accounts, as seen above.

The 27-year-old center will sign a four-year, $88 million deal with the Rockets. Had he decided to return to the Lakers, Howard could have received a five-year, $118 million contract from the Lakers. The deal is expected to be formalized once the league moratorium on player signings ends on July 10.

Shortly before Howard announced his decision, Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak also issued a statement through NBA.com to confirm the decision of Howard not to return to Los Angeles next season.

"We have been informed of Dwight's decision to not return to the Lakers. Naturally we're disappointed. However, we will now move forward in a different direction with the future of the franchise and, as always, will do our best to build the best team possible, one our great Lakers fans will be proud to support. To Dwight, we thank him for his time and consideration, and for his efforts with us last season. We wish him the best of luck on the remainder of his NBA career."

Howard's decision confirmed earlier reports suggesting it was highly unlikely he'd return to the Lakers. The seven-time All-Star is reportedly unhappy with the system of Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni. Howard also doesn't want to play second fiddle to Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant in the next three to four years.

Howard, who was acquired by the Lakers in a blockbuster deal before the start of last season, is expected to provide a huge boost to the talented Rockets squad that also features All-Star guard James Harden and Chandler Parsons.

The Rockets are also reportedly eyeing Atlanta Hawks forward Josh Smith, who happens to be a close friend of Howard. The Rockets are allegedly in talks with the Hawks about a sign-and-trade deal that will send Smith to Houston in exchange for Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik.
