NBA Free Agency News 2013: Miami Heat Add Super-Athletic D.J. Stephens; Forward To Summer League Roster
The Miami Heat spent their entire Thursday as spectators at the 2013 NBA Draft only to add an undrafted player with off-the-chart athletic ability.
Despite the absence of a draft pick, the Heat still managed to tap an intriguing talent they could mold into a key player for their future campaigns.
Memphis Tiger forward D.J Stephens was picked by the defending NBA champions and was included to the team's summer league roster.
Stephens is the most explosive athlete in this year's draft class after he recorded the highest standing vertical leap (40 inches) and running vertical leap (46 inches) ever since the NBA started to stage a combine workout.
However, many scouts are concerned about the forward's inability to dribble the ball and his lack of an offensive game. Yet, there's no doubt Stephen can go up there way above the rim.
If he makes it to the lineup next season, Stephens is expected to give the Heat another energy player alongside Chris Andersen (if re-signed by the Heat) off the bench.
Stephens averaged 7.6 points and 6.6 rebounds in his senior year with the Tigers. He also served as the anchor of Memphis' defense, averaging 2.6 blocks per game to earn him the Conference USA defensive player of the year award.
The Heat also added Texas Longhorns guard Myck Kabongo to their summer league roster. Kobango averaged 14.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game in his sophomore season with the Longhorns.
The inclusion of Kabongo in the summer league roster should be a good complement to Chalmers and Norris Cole, who have seen ups and downs throughout the Heat's postseason run.
