NBA: Hall Of Famer Chicago Bull Scottie Pippen Questioned By Police In Malibu
National Basketball Association Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen has been questioned by police about an altercation over the weekend in which an autograph-seeker was left hospitalized with a head injury.
Pippen was not arrested as previously reported.
"Our detectives are not going to book and arrest Mr. Pippen," said L.A. County Sheriff's Department Captain Pat Davoren. "He came in and was very cooperative and answered a lot of questions. Our detectives have to do further investigating, mainly talking to other witnesses."
Pippen came in voluntarily to the sheriff's substation after he was named a suspect for an assault outside Nobu restaurant in Malibu. He was released after an hour of questioning pending further investigation. Pippen was eating dinner with his family when a man approached him about an autograph. After a heated argument, Pippen was accused of punching the man in the face, sending him to the hospital with unspecified injuries. Several witness told police the fan appeared intoxicated.
"Right now it's under investigation," said sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore. "We have to interview everybody to find out what happened."
The 47-year-old former Chicago Bulls forward won six NBA titles alongside Michael Jordan and was named one of the NBA's 50 Greatest Players of All Time. He was inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame in 2010. Pippen is currently a special adviser to the Bulls' president and chief operating officer. The team declined comment.
