NBA Trade Rumors 2013: Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Clippers Re-Start Talks To Send Kevin Garnett's And Doc Rivers' Talents to The West Coast
The Los Angeles Clippers and the Boston Celtics have renewed talks that could open the door for forward Kevin Garnett and coach Doc Rivers to head to the west coast.
The biggest snag in negotiations appears to be the Clippers' reluctance to part with guard Eric Bledsoe, who the Celtics want to acquire along with center DeAndre Jordan and a draft pick for Garnett. Sources tell ESPN's Marc Stein and Ramona Shelburne that Boston will not consent to releasing Rivers from his three-year, $21 million contract if they don't receive both Bledsoe and Jordan in the Garnett trade.
The Clippers, who have an open coaching vacancy after releasing Vinny Del Negro, want to give the job to Rivers but are open to hiring former Memphis Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins, who also was recently released from his duties, or Indiana assistant coach Brian Shaw.
Los Angeles is hoping that a counter-proposal of Jordan, Caron Butler's $8 million expiring contract, and a first-round draft choice in exchange for Garnett and either Courtney Lee (owed three years,$14.4 million) or Jason Terry (owed $11 million over the next two seasons) might be enough to entice the Celtics to agree to a deal. Shedding Lee's or Terry's contract would give the Celtics much-needed salary cap relief.
If the Clippers pull off the trade, they hope to sign free agent-to-be Paul Pierce, reuniting him with Rivers and Garnett, in order to convince All-Star point guard Paul Pierce to re-sign with the Clippers, who would then keep Bledsoe as trade-bait for future upgrades to the team.
