NBA: Indiana Pacers Star Roy Hibbert Fined $75,000 For Slurs During 2013 Playoffs Press Conference (Video)
Indiana Pacers star Roy Hibbert's wallet is about $75,000 lighter after the NBA fined him for a pair of slurs-one of them with homophobic implications-following the Pacers' Game 6 win in Indianapolis Saturday.
Hibbert, who has been having a stellar postseason, apologized for remarks that he made during the Game 6 postgame press conference. One of them involved responding to a question regarding his defense on Miami Heat star LeBron James with "no homo." The other slur was used to refer to reporters as "y'all mother[expletive]s."
On Sunday, Hibbert issued a statement through the Pacers' web site apologizing for his "insensitive" remarks.
"They were disrespectful and offensive and not a reflection of my personal views. I used a slang term that is not appropriate in any setting, private or public, and the language I used definitely has no place in a public forum, especially over live television. I apologize to those who I have offended, to our fans and to the Pacers' organization. I sincerely have deep regret over my choice of words last night."
David Stern, the NBA Commissioner, said that he had acknowledged Hibbert's apology, but deemed the fine as "necessary."
"While Roy has issued an apology, which is no doubt sincere, a fine is necessary to reinforce that such offensive comments will not be tolerated by the NBA," Stern said, as reported by ESPN.
On Monday, when asked about the situation, Hibbert replied, "I made a statement and that's all I'm going to comment on it."
When asked about how he was keeping focused for the game, Hibbert's answer was simple.
"I'm ready to play tonight. Game 7," he said. "I haven't been in this position in the three years I've been in the playoffs, so I'm just going to go out there and play tough and hard."
