NBA: Hawks Hire San Antonio Assistant Mike Budenholzer; Former Atlanta Coach Larry Drew Takes the Milwaukee Bucks Job
Larry Drew has come to terms with Milwaukee Bucks to coach their team next season, according to the team's general manager.
"We are pleased to reach an agreement with Larry Drew to become head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks," Bucks GM John Hammond said in a statement. "After a thorough search and interview process, it is clear to us that Larry's track record in Atlanta, along with his experience as an assistant coach and player, make him the right choice to lead our club. We look forward to what he will bring to this franchise and we welcome him and his family to Milwaukee."
Drew coached the Atlanta Hawks the last three seasons, going 18-102 (.557) and making the postseason each of those years - including guiding the team to a six-seed playoff berth before being eliminated by the Indiana Pacers.
Hawks general manager Danny Ferry let Drew's contract expire as part of his re-building process for the Atlanta franchise. The Hawks hired San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Mike Budenholzer, on Tuesday.
"[Budenholzer] has an incredible basketball acumen and has a keen awareness of the league and what it takes to be successful," said Ferry. "His experience and four championships over the last 17 years provide a tremendous foundation for his leadership of our team."
Drew's contract is a three-year deal with a team option for the fourth year, according to the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel.
Drew becomes the Bucks' 13th coach in franchise history, replacing interim-coach Jim Boylan, who took over after Scott Skiles was fired in January. The Bucks made the playoffs this year, as an eight-seed, only to be swept by the Miami Heat.
Coaching vacancies are quickly filling up in the NBA with the Phoenix Suns hiring Jeff Hornacek and the Charlotte Bobcats handing over the reins of the team to Steve Clifford, earlier this week. The Sacramento Kings also signed Mike Malone to a $9 million four-year deal (with a team option on the final year) on Friday, according to Yahoo! Sports Adrian Wojnarowski.
Currently, the Brooklyn Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, Los Angeles Clippers, and Detroit Pistons are all still looking for head coaches.
