2013 NBA Playoffs: New York Knicks' JR Smith Wins NBA Sixth Man Of the Year; Watch Video Highlights of Smith's Season
After a sensational season off the bench this season, New York Knicks' guard J.R. Smith has won the Sixth Man of the Year award.
Sources told the Associated Press Monday that Smith will be given the award at a press conference held by the Knicks in the afternoon at 2:30 p.m. As the New York Daily News notes, Smith outlasted several strong candidates including Jamal Crawford (Clippers), Manu Ginobili (Spurs) and Jarrett Jack (Warriors).
And it has been due to the scintillating scoring that the 27-year-old eight year NBA veteran has provided off the bench for the Atlantic Division champion Knicks this season. Smith is the second-highest scorer on the Knicks with 18.1 points, second only to NBA scoring champion Carmelo Anthony.
He's come a long way considering that Smith almost left New York as a free agent over the summer, but ultimately decided to stay with the Knicks when he resigned in July on a two-year deal, stating ""despite my other options, New York is the best situation for me."
Under the terms of the contract, Smith is due to make $2.8 million this season and the same salary next season, and with his win of the Sixth Man trophy, he will likely be looking at a bigger deal, especially if he can repeat next season.
The award went to James Harden last season, who was a member of the Oklahoma City Thunder at that time before he was traded to Houston prior to the start of the season.
The streaky Smith's scoring turned red-hot in April, Smith averaging 22.0 points for the Knicks and helping them clinch the division for the first time since 1993-94 while helping them also clinch the No.2 seed in the East. Smith becomes only the third Knick to win the award since John Starks and Anthony Mason, and the first to win it for New York since Starks won the Sixth Man of the Year award in 1996-97.
