Carmelo Anthony booed in Denver; Knicks Star Hurts Knee Adding Insult To Injury
The New York Knicks are looking like the walking wounded as they lost their best player.
Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony went down during Wednesday's game against the Denver Nuggets. The Nuggets fans rained boos on their former star, but it was his lingering knee injury that has Coach Mike Woodson worried as he explained to ESPN after the 117-94 loss. He's scheduled to have his right knee drained of fluid on Thursday and there's been timetable for his return back on the court.
"When a key guy goes down, that's a big piece, a major piece to your puzzle, sure you've got to worry," Woodson said. "There's no doubt I'm worried. There's no doubt I'm worried about Carmelo. But I'm worried about our team as a whole with how we're playing. Coming out of that Utah game at home these past two games have been a nightmare for all of us."
Carmelo scored just nine points before he left the game. This was a follow up to a 14 point effort on Monday against Golden State. Anthony shot only 4-for-14 in that game and admitted after the game that his knee was bothering him.
"I just didn't have it. I tried" Anthony said following the game, according to ESPN.
Woodson has a good reason to worry, not just about Carmelo, but also about All-Star center Tyson Chandler. The Knicks' most important defensive player, Chandler suffered a knee contusion with Corey Brewer during the game. These injuries add to an already hobbled team dealing with the possible season ending loss of Amar'e Stoudemire, who just had surgery on his right knee. Stoudemire is expected to miss six weeks. Chandler is listed as day-to day. The Knicks next play the Portland Trailblazers on Thursday.
