Sony's Xperia lineup represents some of the best smartphones and other devices available on the market, and the Xperia Z Ultra phablet is no exception. The device is big, fast and powerful, and now a new version appears to have Wi-Fi capabilities, unlike earlier models.

As PhoneArena reported, according to an FCC filing a new version of the Xperia Z Ultra may be coming to users here in the United States very soon. While it looks to have the same specs as the previous version of the device, the big new feature is it's Wi-Fi-only designation. The Wi-Fi listed for the Xperia Z Ultra is Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac along with NFC, GPS, and Bluetooth 4.0 with Bluetooth LE (low energy).

The new model's Wi-Fi options along with the ability to connect to 2.4GHz and 5.xGhz bands means that the Xperia Z Ultra will be able to connect and handle some of the most advanced Wi-Fi networks available to users. In addition, the phablet's ability to use Bluetooth LE to connect with other devices with the feature means that all this additional power will not come at the expense of the handset's battery life.

This new version of the Xperia Z Ultra does not have a name, but is listed by the FCC as a "portable UMPC mini-tablet" and "portable handset," pretty much confirming the Z Ultra's phablet status. The new model appears to have the same dimensions as the previous models of the Xperia Z Ultra, so if users want to upgrade to the new phablet the accessories and cases will work for it as well.

The new model of the Xperia Z Ultra will keep the same display as the original, coming in at 6.4-inch display with Full HD with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. It was not confirmed if the new model will have the same specs as the original Xperia Z Ultra, but it can be assumed that the specs will be the same, if not improved slightly. No price was attached to the new model as well.

It is unclear when Sony will officially introduce this new model to the public. However, considering Sony's got several upcoming events where it could potentially announce the new model, we could be see the device hit Verizon, Sprint or AT&T in the near future.
