Grand Theft Auto 5 was released on Sept. 17 without the game's highly-anticipated online mode, but now, ahead of the multiplayer mode's Oct. 1 release date, Rockstar has revealed new details about online gameplay, including confirmation that the game will have microtransactions.
Rockstar confirmed the news on the Rockstar Newswire, and explained that the feature is designed to help out impatient players and is not necessary to completing missions in GTA 5's online mode.
"...if you're the completely instant gratification type, you can choose to buy denominations of GTA$. You will have the option to purchase GTA$ through the in-game Store. The game and its economy have been designed and balanced for the vast majority of players who will not buy extra cash. There is no in-game paywall and nothing that should disrupt the balance of the game. You don't have to spend real money to attain the cars, guns, clothes, flash and style of a high-roller in Los Santos, but can if you wish to get them a little quicker. The economy is balanced differently from the single player economy, and cash earned in one cannot be taken over to the other. Most players will earn cash much faster Online than in Story Mode," wrote Rockstar on the company's website.
Rockstar also revealed that the online portion of the game will offer frequent free content updates. Four different content packs were announced by Rockstar. The Content Creator will launch as a way for players to start building their own deathmatch and race maps for taking down both rival crews and their friends as well.
The Beach Bum Pack is more of a content update, including four new vehicles for the game designed for traveling around the beaches of Los Santos. The update will also give players 300 new clothing items to purchase in the various stores. Finally, this pack will introduce two new weapons as well, though Rockstar did not specify what these weapons will be.
The third content update discussed was the inclusion of a Capture the Flag mode, which will let players make their own flags for use in the match. Finally, Rockstar plans to include Heists in Grand Theft Auto 5 Online, which will be similar to the way the missions work in the single player game. Players must play out the heist then execute with their friends or crew members.
