GTA 5 News: Online Gameplay May Include Microtransactions

It looks like the millions of dollars Rockstar is already raking in from the record-breaking sales of Grand Theft Auto 5 since its Sept. 17 release just aren't enough for the game developer. A Reddit user reportedly found a file for an in-game store for GTA 5's online mode that would allow microtransactions in the game.

The file the user found includes some content already made available to users who pre-ordered the game or bought the Collector's or Special Edition of the game. This includes the Atomic Blimp and other objects that aren't available to those who bought the regular versions of the game. This type of offer is fairly typical in video games, but the real piece of intriguing information here is the four "cash cards" that will also be a part of the in-game store. These four cash cards can be bought with real world money, and they will give players extra spending cash in the game, ranging from $100,000 to $1.25 million. "Cash is king in this town. Solve your money problems and help get what you want across Los Santos and Blaine County with the purchase of cash packs for Grand Theft Auto Online. All purchased cash is automatically deposited into your character's bank account. Spend wisely, cash therapy is fleeting," reads the description of the cash cards. 

If the leak is accurate, then it looks like players will be able to buy their way to some of the more extravagant items in GTA 5 online. Rockstar has never put microtransactions in other Grand Theft Auto titles, but considering how massive the game's online mode is set to be, and the popularity of microtransactions and in-game stores, it makes sense that Rockstar would try out the feature. Of course, some users may be against the feature, especially if it allows players to buy better equipment and makes it easier for players to gain rank and advantage over other players. After all, if one crew is able to buy the best equipment with real world money instead of earning it then the game will tip in their favor unfairly.
