Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn has had a rocky road since launch, mimicking the original Final Fantasy 14's host of problems. The game suffered from overcrowded servers during its release as Square Enix didn't expect the high volume of players rushing to play at once. The problem was so bad that Square Enix stopped digital sales of the game so the game could have time to adjust to the influx of characters. Now that the game has had some time to cool down, Square Enix has been able to adjust their servers to allow everyone to play the game.
For those who were locked out the game, Square Enix now offers the chance to buy the game on their online store in both the regular and collector's editions. Now players can get the chance to play the critically acclaimed game (which currently has a solid Metacritic score of 83) along with countless other players on both PC and consoles.
All things considered, A Realm Reborn could have experienced worse problems. The first version of the game was downright broken when it initially launched. Square Enix informed users about the self-imposed sales embargo on the game's Facebook page:
"Important Notice About FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn - Due to the overwhelmingly positive response to FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn, we are currently experiencing extremely long wait times for users to be able to log in and play. As a temporary measure, we will halt sales of FINAL FANTASY XIV: A REALM REBORN's digital download products so we can accommodate all of those wishing to play. We are working to expand our server capacity in the coming days...We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this causes."
It will be interesting to see how this move affects the sales of the game, as halting online sales may damage the game's early success and make it impossible for it to gain steam again.
