Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn officially launched yesterday, and the game has had a bit of a rough start. The game is having some server issues as well as errors in the character creation portion of the game, which considering the horrendous launch of the original Final Fantasy 14 is not what Square Enix needs from the game. But now Square Enix is reporting that the service issues are coming from the game being too popular for its own good, and they have to put a hold on digital sales of the game to prevent the game from getting even more crowded and causing more problems.
This news comes from the company's Facebook page, and Square Enix explains that the company was not anticipating the amount of users the game would have, despite the popularity of the game's beta program:
"Important Notice about FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn - Due to the overwhelmingly positive response to FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn, we are currently experiencing extremely long wait times for users to be able to log in and play. As a temporary measure, we will halt sales of FINAL FANTASY XIV: A REALM REBORN's digital download products so we can accommodate all of those wishing to play. We are working to expand our server capacity in the coming days. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this causes."
While this news certainly is not the best news, considering the circumstances surrounding both the original Final Fantasy 14 and Square Enix's attempt to make up for the game's terrible damage to the brand as a whole. However, having a game be too popular is not the worst problem to have, all things considered. This problem has occurred in other MMO games in the past, most notably in Guild Wars 2. Now hopefully Square Enix can focus on fixing the error that shuts out gamers from creating new avatars in the game, as if users cannot create a character they cannot join the game if they bought the game before this ban.
Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn represents several years of work from Square Enix's part, and it looks as though fans of the series and MMO's in general have taken to the game, at least initially. Critics are still sorting out their opinions about the game, and it will be interesting to see how much long term success the game will have.
