Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn is coming out Aug. 27 for the PlayStation 3 and PC (with a PlayStation 4 version in the works as well), and MMO fans are eagerly awaiting the chance to experience the rebuilt game and see if Square Enix has made up for the disaster that was the original Final Fantasy 14. One of the big selling points of the game is the ability to have cross-platform play, which also happens to be why the game will not be coming to Microsoft consoles.
Naoki Yoshida, game director for A Realm Reborn, recently spoke for RPGsite, and explained that Microsoft would require its own server for the game, and thus would not allow Xbox 360/Xbox One users to play with PlayStation 3/4 and PC users. This goes against the director's own sensibility for connecting gamers, he said.
"The main reason from our side is that I don't want the community to be divided; to be split into two or more," said Yoshida. "For example, one player might be on the PC version, another might be on the PS4 version, and I'm playing the Xbox version - but we're not able to join the same game servers. That is just... I just don't like the idea. I disagree with it...To be frankly honest with you, there are now so many mobile devices, smart phones, everything -- why would you ever just stick to one platform from the hardware aspect? Just -- make it open to everyone? That's my opinion."
While there will be some Xbox 360 fans who are disappointed that they will not get the chance to play the game, they will have many opportunities to play the single player Final Fantasy games in the works for the Xbox 360 and Xbox One, as well as Kingdom Hearts 3. Perhaps in time Microsoft will revise their cross-platform policy, but until that happens Xbox owners will just have to continue playing amongst themselves.
