According to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 31,785 people lost their lives in 2022 due to traffic accidents. Although this is a small decrease compared to 2021, it's still a concerning number.

The most common reason for these tragedies is human error. Despite all the warnings and marketing campaigns, many Americans have a tendency to drive under the influence. However, the reason behind the accident might be less sinister. For example, numerous drivers lose their lives due to tiredness or slow reaction speed.

Although you can't calculate for every situation, it's your duty to get acquainted with the potential road risks. That way, you can at least reduce the likelihood of the worst-case outcome.

1. Speeding

No matter how much money the government spends on education and awareness, young people will still exceed the speed limit. This habit is prevalent among young males who just bought their first (or new) vehicle.

Besides speeding on highways and rural roads, many people are too aggressive in urban traffic. "Often, drivers suffer an accident as they try to avoid hitting a pedestrian," according to the Barnes Firm, known as the NYC best car accident lawyer. The zones around schools and public institutions are especially troublesome as they have lots of foot traffic and negligent kids.

Luckily, accidents due to speeding can be prevented completely. It's just up to you to be more responsible behind the wheel.

2. DIY

When we talk about DIY, most people think of alcohol. However, as marihuana became legal in most states, we now have to think about drivers getting high. Like with speeding, this issue is more common among young individuals. As they lack experience, they often misjudge their capacity to drive a vehicle.

No matter what you used, it can significantly impair your judgment and reflexes. And while we might argue that it's possible to drive safely after a few beers, it's much better to simply call a cab and eliminate the risk. Keep in mind that DIY infractions often go hand in hand with other causes of the accident.

3. Weather

Sometimes, the accident might be caused by something completely out of your hands. The best example of that is the weather.

Rain, snow, and ice can make the roads extremely slippery. Even if you're driving slowly, there's a chance you'll hit a wet spot and spiral out of control. Thick fog is potentially worse, as it can completely impair your vision.

And while you can't wish away bad weather, there are a few tricks that can help you out. For example, you should always postpone your voyage if the conditions are rough. Similarly, you should use road apps that will tell you more about the situation on the local roads.

4. Tired driving

Most people in the US have to commute at least 10 miles to their place of work. Some of us have to drive even further to reach the office. This can be a major issue after enduring arduous shifts.

Unlike drunk driving and speeding, accidents caused by tiredness are much more common among people in their 30s and 40s. As you get older and get kids, going to work can be a challenge in itself, not to mention all the fatigue that piles up while at the office.

Ideally, you should find ways to commute without a car. This might be a tall task if you live in a small town, but it's completely feasible in larger urban areas.

5. Traffic signs

You might also suffer an accident after disregarding or not seeing traffic signs. Like speeding, it's up to a person to adjust his or her driving according to the traffic rules.

Such accidents are much more common if you're new to a city. Older drivers know every part of their hometown, so they're less likely to disregard STOP signs.

Whatever the case might be, it's your responsibility to take note of the surrounding. In the end, if you cause a mess, the cops won't ask you whether or not you saw the nearby sign.

6. Car issues

Of course, you might also suffer an accident due to a simple car malfunction. Faulty brakes and tire issues are the two things drivers should always be aware of, but you might also suffer due to some other problem.

These mishaps are more common for older cars. However, freak accidents might also occur to brand-new vehicles straight out of a showroom. The best method of preventing such accidents is by performing regular checkups and driving within the car's limitations.
