There are rumors that a remake of the 1976 sci-fi film, “Logan’s Run,” will finally happen. The project has actually been in development since the 1990s and Warner Bros. may finally decide to come up with a recent version soon.

Collider revealed that Nicholas Winding Refn was supposed to serve as director, while Ryan Gosling was supposed to star in the remake. However, the project did not materialize. Later on, writer/producer Simon Kinberg got involved to write the story for the remake of “Logan’s Run,” which excited fans that the movie remake will finally happen.

The original film focused on a dystopian society where citizens are killed when they reach 30 years old to prevent overpopulation. According to Kinberg, Warner Bros. is planning for the remake to become the start of a huge franchise.

“We are talking to directors for that movie [right now]… It definitely is [a priority for the studio]. It’s something that potentially is their Hunger Games kind of franchise that is about a younger audience for a younger audience with a big idea. And Logan’s Run, as you know, is the granddaddy of Maze Runner and Hunger Games and so many of these books and movies now. So yeah, they’re seeing it as a potentially really big franchise.”Kinberg said in an exclusive interview with Collider.

The producer added that their primary focus is on making a great movie. If people respond positively with the one they create, that will be the time they begin making future films, based on the story of the previous successful one. Kinberg said that there is a lot of material to work with from the original movie. He admired the narration and setup, so they might come up with a reinterpretation from the original movie, instead of a complete recreation.

ScreenRant wrote that “Logan’s Run” will be Warner Bros.’ version of “The Hunger Games.” The plot revolving around Katniss Everdeen was actually inspired by “Logan’s Run,” among other movies. As “The Hunger Games” winds down to a close soon, it may be the perfect time to launch a remake of the 1976 movie.

The studio, however, will face the challenge of maintaining its appeal to viewers who have been bombarded with somewhat similar stories with “The Hunger Games,” “The Divergent Series” and “The Maze Runner.” The project can bank on its decades-old popularity and feature its dystopian society to current viewers with positive results.

No official release date for the “Logan’s Run” remake has been announced yet.
