“Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens” is set to launch in theaters on Dec. 18, 2015. It will be the first of another trilogy, which will certainly thrill “Star Wars” fans everywhere. There are talks that Lucasfilm is planning to create several standalone Anthology films based on the various characters of the franchise and come up with a “Star Wars” movie every year, Screen Rant wrote.

Until 2020, Lucasfilm has several related projects planned, including three saga films and three Anthology spinoffs. It seems like Lucasfilm and Disney are planning to continue producing “Star Wars” movies as long as fans continue to watch these.

Wired reported that the company plans to produce a new “Star Wars” movie on an annual basis as long as people will buy tickets.

“It’s the forever franchise,” Wired stated.

Lawrence Kasdan, co-writer of “The Force Awakens,” explained that the strategy can be effective, considering the rich mythology and open-ended stories of the characters in the films. Kasdan said that “Star Wars” is its own genre, and can hold a million different types of stories and artists. The story can be anything you want it to be.

Although many are optimistic about the plan, Screen Rant wrote that there may also be consequences, such as franchise fatigue after a few years. The first two trilogies featured an installment every three years, which made viewers look forward to each release. A yearly release might be well-received at first, but fans may eventually grow tired of the series because of its availability. Furthermore, plotting to far ahead might drastically change the story. Lucasfilm might end up having too much on work on and compromise the quality and storyline of the new movies.

Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, acknowledged that it is better to focus on the current tasks instead of plotting very far in the future. She mentioned that Alan Horn, chair of Walt Disney Studios, is very supportive of the plan. She added that she will be working with the team on a new “Indiana Jones” film.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” will launch on Dec. 18, 2015. “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” will release on Dec. 16, 2016. “Star Wars: Episode VIII” will release on May 26, 2017. The Han Solo “Star Wars” Anthology film on May 25, 2018. “Star Wars: Episode IX” will launch in 2019. The third “Star Wars” Anthology movie will release in 2020.
