The “Fast & Furious” franchise has released seven movies so far, and there are new talks that more prequels and spin-offs are in development.

ComingSoon reported that there was recent confirmation that F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) will serve as director of the eighth installment of “Fast & Furious,” which will also be the first of a new trilogy of movies. Furthermore, Variety revealed that Universal Pictures and Vin Diesel are working on “Fast & Furious” prequels and spin-offs. The direct sequels will have a different tone compared to their predecessors.

“We’ve written out story lines for various characters. We’ve been playing with it for a long time. It’s a very rich property and we’re committed to treating it with a lot of class.” Diesel said. Diesel did not mention which characters might have their own movie, although Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson said that he would be interested in having his character, Luke Hobbs, star in a solo film. Diesel also said that Gray is a director who can bring the darkness and character out.

There are also rumors that the staple enemies in the previous films may also have their own standalone movies, but take on good roles. Potential candidates include Owen Shaw (Luke Evans), his brother Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), and their mom (Helen Mirren). Overall, there are so many options available for every character. Many of them have grown to become well-loved by fans through the years, so it would make sense to have them star in their own film, featuring their backstory. In some cases, the trilogy might reveal how some supposedly dead characters faked their deaths, Entertainment Weekly wrote.

Jeff Shell, Universal Filmed Entertainment Group chairman, said that it is impossible to feature bigger stunts in every future film, so they have to focus on the story eventually. The plot is expected to be richer, while there will be no departure from the exciting stunts that the franchise is known for. Shell added that Diesel has plans to make three more films, so they will do just that then determine how to proceed afterwards.

Donna Langley, Universal Pictures Chairman, confirmed that current discussions were focused on how they can expand the franchise. She added that it is an ensemble cast and there is enough space to add or remove characters.

More updates and details on “Fast & Furious” and the upcoming trilogy are expected soon.
