It's a bit difficult to believe that a hit series like "Modern Family" can get the axe, but that's exactly what happened, at least, according to cast member, Eric Stonestreet. He also tweeted a link about the story, with the caption, "so sad".
The headline of the story that Stonestreet linked to is "Whoa: ABC Just Canceled Modern Family In Order To Teach People That Something You Love Can Be Taken From You With No Warning Whatsoever."
Fans were devastated, but before you give in to violent reactions, here's the catch: it was all a joke.
According to E! News, Clickhole is a satire website that was run by the same people from "The Onion" and the truth is, no, "Modern Family" has not been cancelled. Networks don't cancel their award-winning shows, and "Modern Family" is the recipient to four Emmys, not to mention one of the top-rated comedy series on TV these days.
The false report included a GIF of a sobbing Stonestreet, also reporting a fictitious statement from an ABC executive that said, "It saddens us to cancel a show as beloved as 'Modern Family,' but people need to be taught that having something you cherish suddenly as inexplicably wrenched from your grasp is intrinsic to life."
The site even posted a made-up quote from one of the series stars, Julie Bowen, saying, "We've had a blast making this show for the last six seasons, but I trust the network's decision to cancel it as a way of showing people firsthand just how quickly the things that we love can be erased from existence. In an instant. In the blink of an eye. When we least expect it and it hurts us most. If 'Modern Family' has to die in order for people to realize that, then that's just the price we'll have to pay."
The International Business Times said that Clickhole is very open about the fact that it is a satirical site, even noting that its recent hoaxes include "Let's Move! Michelle Obama Urges Kids To Get Outside And Check Out The Dead Guy She Found," and "Meet The Puppeteer Behind Blue Ivy."
Still, plenty were led to believe that the news is serious. Don't worry, "Modern Family" fans, it was all a joke for Halloween. According to the Hollywood Life, this is not the first time that false reports of top shows were reported to be cancelled. Empire News once posted that the Netflix series, "Orange is the New Black," also got the axe, but that is obviously untrue.
