HBO confirms that it will conclude its critically-acclaimed television drama, 'Boardwalk Empire.' Reuters reports that the network made the announcement last January 9.
After being renewed for a fifth season last September of 2013, the show's last season is scheduled to air in the fall of this year. In an article on TV Line, series creator Terence Winter said, "After much discussion with my creative team and HBO, we've decided to wrap the series after such a great run and look forward to bringing it to a powerful and exciting conclusion."
And 'Boardwalk' did have a great run.
Since its creation 2010, the show has garnered numerous nominations and awards from prestigious award-giving bodies. As stated in WebProNews, the show has been nominated forty times in the Primetime Emmy Awards and bagged seventeen wins. It also won the in the category of Best Television Drama Series in the 2011 Golden Globe Awards. In addition, in both 2011 and 2012, SAG Award's Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series was given to the 'Boardwalk Empire.'
It was also reported that the show's cancellation is probably due to the series reaching the peak in its storyline. However, although some speculate that the decline in viewership in season four could be the reason, it doesn't seem like its enough to cause network executives to terminate the show.
'Boardwalk Empire' revolves around the character of New Jersey Treasurer Enoch "Nucky" Thompson, played by Steve Buscemi, and his dealings with criminal organizations. Buscemi's character is based on the corrupt political figure during the Prohibition era in the 1920s, Enoch Johnson.
The show was created by Winter, who also served as the writer and executive producer for another HBO series hit, 'The Sopranos'.
Winter is accompanied by a stellar team of producers and writers including Mark Wahlberg, Tim Van Patten, and multi-awarded filmmaker, actor, screenwriter and producer Martin Scorseses, who was also credited for directing the show's pilot episode which aired in September of 2010.
