Justin Lin will direct the fifth installment to the Bourne franchise.

After popular speculation that Paul Greengrass would return to the series, Universal has announced that the "Fast and Furious" and "Fast Five" director will helm the upcoming film.

According to various rumors, Jeremy Renner is slated to reprise his role as Aaron Cross. Anthony Peckham will write the script, while Lin, Frank Marshall, Jeffrey Weiner and Ben Smith will produce the film.

Meanwhile, Chairman Donna Langley, co-president of production Peter Cramer, and vice president of production, Anikah McLaren will oversee the project for Universal.

The Bourne series is one of the most successful franchises in recent times. The first three installments, "The Bourne Supremacy," "The Bourne Identity" and "The Bourne Ultimatum," were critically acclaimed and made over $500 million at the U.S. box office. Additionally, "The Bourne Ultimatum" won three Academy Awards. However, the latest installment "The Bourne Legacy," which rebooted the franchise, was not as successful, becoming the lowest grossing film in the series, making just $113 million domestically. The film was also not critically acclaimed and garnered an aggregate score of 56 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, with an overall critical consensus that the film wasn't as enthralling as previous entries in the franchise, but was still enjoyable. "It isn't quite as compelling as the earlier trilogy ... 'The Bourne Legacy' proves the franchise has stories left to tell -- and benefits from Jeremy Renner's magnetic work in the starring role," wrote Rotten Tomatoes.

The fifth installment will to open in the crowded 2015 slate, which also includes "Star Wars: Episode VII," "Avengers: Age of Ultron," "Jurassic World" and "Fantastic Four."
