A regrettable accident occurred on the night of Saturday, October 5 on the streets of Long Island when a mother and her 10-month-old baby were hit by a truck when they were crossing an avenue.

According to information shared by news network Univisión on its website, mother and daughter were immediately transported to the Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip; however, the baby died shortly after arriving, while the mother was treated for minor injuries.

According to Long Island authorities, quoted by Univisión, the mother of the baby was identified as Yancy Arévalo, 29 years old, was pushing her daughter's Britney's stroller on Saturday night on Route 110, in North Amityville, when they were accidentally run over by a truck.

Local police informed that the accident was not described as criminal, since the driver remained at the scene of the accident and was not going above the speed limit. Authorities added that Arévalo crossed the avenue at a section that did not have any stoplights.

According to El Diario NY, this has not been the only case in which Hispanic families have been affected by similar cases in recent months in New York and New Jersey.

According to the newspaper, last July Angelie Paredes, an eight-month-old baby lost her life when a bus crashed against a light pole which then fell on the stroller in which she was.

Last year in Brooklyn, a car crash caused by a taxi driver tipped over the stroller in which Gustavo and Daniel Machuca were in. Two eight months old twins were severely injured.

The same newspaper points out that in the United States one out of five deaths of minors between one and 14 years of age are caused by vehicles, revealed a study carried out by members of the Department of Health.
