There are few things more daunting in this world than an ominous light that dazzles the night sky. Or out of this world for that matter. Image. You’re taking a pleasant midnight stroll, your ears peeled and your eyes wide as you navigate silence and darkness. The stroll is for soothing, meditative purposes, but let’s be honest, a thread of uneasiness pulls at your subconscious. Then, out of nowhere, your sensories are turned upside down. A bright streaking object illuminates the sky, leaving you breathless, curious and frightened. Your initial thoughts: It’s either a UFO or a meteor. Each scenario sends chills down your spine and will spoil your relaxed mood as you turn to walk home in a brisk stride. For several Italians, this sensation may be all too familiar.

On September 3, between 2:30 a.m. and 2:45 a.m. in northeast Italy, an unidentified object set fire to the night canopy, roaring like thunder and generating a horrific bang. Initial thoughts believed the light to have come from a streaking meteorite, but after a search for meteorite fragments proved unsuccessful, the mystery remains.

The incident upset pets in Padua and Venice, spooking locals who then called police who were little to no help. The fire brigade and police continue to search for any evidence of what exactly caused the midnight extravaganza, but come up empty handed again and again. Check out a video of the fiery “thing” below.

Meteor or extraterrestrials, the looming mystery strikes fear in the hearts of not only Italians, but superstitious citizens across the globe. Beware of ominous monstrosities that turn night into day. That’s usually not a good sign.
