Anna Netrebko Reveals New Repertoire; To Sing 'Macbeth' at Met Opera

Anna Netrebko has revealed her upcoming plans and her new repertoire.

During an interview with Kleine Zeitung, the Russian soprano announced that she would be moving into more dramatic territory as well as expanding the Verdi operas that she would sing. The soprano, who is currently singing Verdi's "Giovanna d'Arco" at Salzburg and promoting the release of her new album "Verdi," said that she was booked for more performances of "Giovanna" in concert. When asked about the perspective of a staged version, Netrebko said she could not imagine a "staged" version of the opera.

When asked about her upcoming projects, Netrebko revealed that Salzburg was planning a new production of Verdi's "Il Trovatore" and that she would revive the composer's "Macbeth" at the Metropolitan Opera.

She also said she would sing Puccini's "Manon Lescaut" in Rome with conductor Riccardo Muti and would also take on the role of Cilea's "Adriana Lecouvreur."

The soprano also shared that she would soon sing in German and that her first move toward that direction would be in Richard Strauss' "Four Last Songs." She said she would perform the song cycle next year with Daniel Barenboim and that she would later take on the role of Elsa in Richard Wagner's "Lohengrin" in 2016 at the Dresden opera under the direction of Christian Thielemann.

The Diva also said that she was excited to take on the role of Maraguerite in Gounod's "Faust" at Baden Baden, Vienna and London.

However, she said that she would have to wait for Verdi's "Don Carlo" because the role of Elisabetta was too big for her voice at the moment. She also added that the role of Desdemona in Verdi's "Otello" was not for her and that she would not sing it even though she has been offered the role for the past 10 years.

The Diva also said that she was retiring all her coloratura roles such as Bellini's "Puritani" but did not specify if that meant she would not be doing "Norma," a role that she is rumored to sing in London in 2016.

Netrebko will next sing at the Met in September where she will open the 2013-14 season in Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin." Following these performances her record company Deutsche Grammophon will release a DVD of the historical Red Square concert and in November she will make her debut as Leonora in "Il Trovatore" at the Berlin State Opera.
