Summer is approaching. That means more time spent outside with your family on the back porch, enjoying the sunshine and a warm breeze as you celebrate life and love with a sweet and savory peanut butter and Nutella sandwich. Unfortunately, we may not all be so lucky this summer as the staple childhood snack's supply has taken a serious hit.
Police reported Monday that a group of thieves stole five metric tons (5.5 tons) of Nutella chocolate-hazelnut spread from a parked trailer in the central German town of Bad Hersfeld over the weekend. There have been no arrests so far as the investigation continues.
It's unknown how many thieves were involved, but what appears like an odd, illogical heist paid off in the end. No one would think to heavily guard a trailer filled with Nutella, at least not as closely as one filled with gold bricks for instance, but stolen lunchtime snack is worth an estimated 16,000 euros ($20,710). The criminals apparently knew what they were doing.
German news agency DPA said that the thieves had previously stolen a large amount of Red Bull energy drinks from the same storage location in Bad Hersfeld. Perhaps their sweet tooth got the best of them and brought them back for more.
The Italian candy making company Ferrero released Nutella in 1963, forever changing the way we look at snack time. In 1944, they released a similar product that wasn't as popular. The new and improved Nutella is based off the original recipe and has succeeded in stealing the hearts of family's worldwide.
It's a sad day for Nutella lovers across the world. Somewhere, some group of rotten thieves are enjoying the fruits of the labors, probably eating Nutella by the spoonful to their hearts' content.
