Despite Star Wars: Battlefront 3's status as the biggest surprise to come out of E3 2013, DICE hasn't explained much about game. But now DICE Executive Producer Patrick Bach has spoken to BAFTA in London about the game (as well as about Battlefield 4).
According to IGN, Bach revealed that, before the company had even acquired the rights to the series, the team at DICE had discussed the franchise and how the company could create both Battlefront and Battlefield at the same time.
"It's quite interesting. For some strange reason - coincidence, I don't know - we had a discussion at the office about what happened to Battlefront. You know, the old IP that someone else made that was a ripoff of Battlefield. Bastards! We should've made it. It was a competition of powers. We couldn't do both at the same time," said Bach.
Bach said he was just as surprised as anyone else when EA acquired the rights to the series and the company was offered the chance to continue the franchise after the Battlefront series lost some of it's luster in recent years:
"For some reason EA was negotiating with Lucas slash Disney, as to whom should make the new Star Wars games. And just a week later it was like, 'Oh, by the way, that discussion you were having about Star Wars? Do you want to make it?'... 'Well, yeah.'"
Once the company knew they would be able to develop Star Wars Battlefront, Bach discussed how the development team went from eager and excited about the game to nervous about potentially screwing up the franchise's revival:
"We weren't as cocky when we got the chance, because to take on something like this is scary, as you can imagine. You can only screw up, right? We've been promising ourselves if we're doing this we need to do it right. So trust me, we're hard at work to figure this one out."
DICE and EA have kept the development of the newest Battlefront game under wraps, and besides the E3 reveal trailer no new videos have been released concerning the game. No consoles have been assigned to the game, and the game does not even have a release window as of yet. DICE had opened up a new offshoot studio, DICE LA, that was supposedly created to handle Star Wars games, but the main DICE team decided to handle this critical game.
