When Apple's Jony Ive introduced the new iOS 7, flat icons, the bright color scheme, and other cosmetic changes took center stage. Some like it; some don't. But one upgrade in iOS 7 is making people sick - literally.
And for iPhone and iPad users who are experiencing motion sickness from the new zooming animations and Apple's 3D parallax effects, there's no going back, because Apple has unsigned iOS 6.
At first glance, the parallax effect is pretty cool. In exchange for the "depth" that textured icons used to deliver on iOS, Ive added a 3D effect that makes it feel as if you can see "under" the icons when you tilt the screen.
"One of the things that we are interested in doing is, despite people talked about this being 'flat,' is that it's very, very deep," said Ive in an interview with Businessweek. "It wasn't an aesthetic idea to try to create layers. It was a way of trying to sort of deal with different levels of information that existed and to try to give you a sense of where you were."
But some of the over 200 million people who have downloaded iOS 7 so far have a sense that they're out to sea without a paddle. According to a growing number of people posting on Apple's iOS 7 forums, the zoom animations and 3D effects are making people sick.
"I'm now going on day 3 of total nausea. At first I didn't want to believe it's because of iOS 7, but I can't stand even looking at non animation areas for more than a few minutes even typing this," said one customer. "Same here! So sick for the last three days. SO DIZZY. I thought I was going to pass out today!" agreed another.
"So today has been a total wash. I had to go home 'sick' from work because of the intense nausea due to using my iPhone with iOS 7... At this point I have no choice but to downgrade back to the previous iOS," said yet another nauseated Apple user.
But downgrading is no longer a viable option. Apple has stopped signing older versions of iOS. While re-installing iOS 6 is still possible, it won't have access to the iTunes store and other essentials, and the process is too difficult for anyone who isn't used to hacking and jailbreaking their iPhone. For most users, an attempt to downgrade to iOS 6 will dead-end in an error message and restoring their iPhone back to the turbulent waters of iOS 7.
Apple, of course, wants you to use the newest version of its OS, as a lack of operating system fragmentation is a particular point of pride for Tim Cook and company.
There's still a way to reduce the seasickness caused by iOS 7. Apple has an option under accessibility called "Reduce Motion," which should end the parallax effect on your iPhone or iPad's homescreen. But users are getting sick from the zooming effects that happen when opening or closing an app, and that doesn't have an easy fix. Until Apple makes a way to disable these effects, dizzy iOS 7 users will either have to try to keep their feet planted firmly on the ground - or buy an Android.
